How does this work?
Well, the brain is pretty in tune with your body, and in this case certain muscle/nerve stimuli from you face (namely, the zygomatic major, the muscle necessary for you to smile) signal to the brain that you’re probably pretty stoked about something.
This, in turn, releases neurotransmitters that tell your whole brain and body, “Hey, guess what? We’re happy!” This, of course, is a simplified explanation but it pretty much sums up the effects smiling can have on our psyches.

Anytime you find yourself feeling a little frowny or irritated/sad/morose, try smiling. A genuine smile. Hold it for about 15 to 30 seconds. When you release it, note the change in your outlook.
